Ammit is the devourer who waits in the Hall of Two Truths, where the dead are judged before Osiris. Her body fuses Egypt's three most fearsome animals: the head of a crocodile, the forequarters of a lion, the hindquarters of a hippopotamus. When a heart is weighed against the feather of Ma'at and found heavy with sin, it is thrown to Ammit, who swallows it whole. This second death is total annihilation, denying the soul any afterlife. She is never worshipped or petitioned; she crouches by the scales as the silent, certain price of a life lived without truth.
