Feather of Maat

Egyptian mythology

Feather of Maat

The white ostrich feather of truth and justice, against which every human heart was weighed in the Hall of Two Truths.

Characters
Ammit · Anubis · Maat · Osiris · Thoth

The feather of Maat was the white ostrich plume of truth and justice worn by the goddess Maat, and the sign that wrote her name. Against it every human heart was weighed in the Hall of Two Truths, as spell 125 of the Book of the Dead describes: the dead first declared their innocence before forty-two judges, then the heart was weighed.

Anubis tended the balance and Thoth recorded the verdict, before Osiris. A heart that balanced the feather was declared true of voice and went on to the Field of Reeds; a heavy one was devoured by Ammit. It is the core of The Weighing of the Heart.
