Meresger, whose name means She Who Loves Silence, is the cobra goddess of the peak that towers over the Valley of the Kings at Thebes. She is both punishing and merciful: she strikes the wicked and the oath-breaker with blindness and venom, yet heals those who repent and pray to her humbly. The tomb-builders of Deir el-Medina, who lived in her shadow, left moving carved confessions of their sins and gratitude for her cures, worshipping her as a goddess who truly listened, judged, and forgave.
