The Valley of the Kings is a desolate canyon in the limestone cliffs of western Thebes, where New Kingdom pharaohs were hidden for their eternal journey from about 1500 to 1070 BC. Above it rises a pyramid-shaped peak, home of Meresger, the cobra goddess 'who loves silence'.

The tombs are painted with the Amduat and the Book of Gates, maps of the sun's night journey in which the king hoped to join Ra and Osiris, as in The Amduat: Ra and Osiris United. Anubis oversaw the embalming, Isis and Nephthys spread their wings over the coffin and Horus's sons guarded the organs. Tutankhamun's tomb was found here in 1922.
