Hapi, Son of Horus, is the baboon-headed guardian of the canopic jars, and the lungs of the mummified dead are placed in his keeping. He watches over the north, and the goddess Nephthys protects him as he protects the breath itself. In the funerary rites his task is to keep the lungs safe so the dead can breathe again at resurrection, one of the four quiet sentinels standing eternal watch around the body.
