Kherty is a ram-headed god of the earth and the underworld, an ancient ferryman who carries the dead across to the realm below. Worshipped at Letopolis and other early cult centers, he was a figure to be reckoned with: the Pyramid Texts show concern that he might threaten the dead king, who is placed instead under the protection of Ra. Neither welcoming nor cruel, Kherty embodies the strange, implacable otherness of the underworld, a territory where the soul is stripped of every familiar comfort and even divine favor must be claimed anew.
