Giza
Home of the great pyramids and the Sphinx, where pharaohs were entombed to ascend among the stars.
Giza is the desert plateau of the great pyramids and the Sphinx, where Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure were entombed some 4,500 years ago. The pyramids were built for rebirth: the Pyramid Texts, carved two centuries later at nearby Saqqara, describe the dead king ascending to the stars and joining Ra in his boat.
In the New Kingdom the Sphinx was worshipped as Harmakhis, Horus in the horizon, and on the Dream Stele of Thutmose IV it speaks as Harmakhis, Khepri, Ra and Atum to promise him the throne. In the Westcar Papyrus, Khufu seeks the secret chambers of Thoth's sanctuary for his tomb, and the necropolis, Rosetau, belonged to Osiris.
