Harmakhis, 'Horus on the Horizon,' is the falcon god in his solar aspect, the rising sun made divine. The Egyptians gave his name to the Great Sphinx of Giza, whose lion body and royal head they worshipped as his living image. Prince Thutmose IV slept in the Sphinx's shadow and dreamed the god promised him the throne if he cleared the sand from its flanks; he became pharaoh and raised the Dream Stela between its paws. Harmakhis guards the threshold of dawn, where the sun is reborn each day.
