Vidar is the silent god, son of Odin and the giantess Grid, second in strength only to Thor. He wears one great thick shoe pieced together over ages from the leather scraps that cobblers trim from toe and heel. At Ragnarok the wolf Fenrir swallows Odin whole, and Vidar strides forward to avenge his father: he plants that mighty shoe on the wolf's lower jaw, grips the upper, and tears Fenrir's maw apart. He is among the survivors of the doom, walking out into the reborn green world to carry the gods' memory forward.
