Grid is a giantess and one of Odin's lovers, mother of the silent god Vidar who will avenge Odin at Ragnarok. When Thor sets out to the hall of the giant Geirrod unarmed, tricked by Loki, he stops at Grid's home. She warns him of Geirrod's treachery and lends him three gifts: her iron gloves, her belt of strength Megingjord in some tellings, and her unbreakable staff Gridarvol. Wading the flooding river Vimur, Thor braces himself on her staff and survives, then uses it to crush Geirrod and his daughters. Her quiet aid saves the thunder god's life.
