Theseus is the great hero of Athens, who clears the road of bandits, then sails to Crete and slays the Minotaur in the heart of the Labyrinth, escaping by Ariadne's thread. He unites Attica under Athens and rules as its model king. Yet his later years curdle into ruin: he abandons Ariadne, dooms his son Hippolytus with a rash curse, and overreaches in the underworld itself.
