Ariadne is the daughter of King Minos who falls in love with Theseus and gives him a ball of thread to escape the Labyrinth after he slays the Minotaur. She flees Crete with him, only to be abandoned on the island of Naxos as she sleeps. There the god Dionysus finds her and takes her as his bride, setting her bridal crown among the stars.
