Phaedra is the Cretan wife of Theseus, struck by Aphrodite with a ruinous passion for her stepson Hippolytus. When he recoils from her in horror, shame and fury overtake her. She hangs herself, leaving behind a letter accusing him of assault, and Theseus calls down Poseidon's curse that destroys his innocent son.
