Hippolytus is the son of Theseus, a devotee of the virgin huntress Artemis who scorns love and Aphrodite both. The slighted goddess curses his stepmother Phaedra with passion for him; rejected, she hangs herself and leaves a note accusing him of assault. Theseus calls down Poseidon's curse, and a bull from the sea panics his horses, dragging the innocent youth to his death.
