Hippolyta is the queen of the Amazons, daughter of Ares, who bears a magnificent girdle given by her father. For his ninth Labor, Heracles sails to win it, and she comes willingly to give it, until Hera spreads a lie that he means to abduct her. In the battle that erupts, the girdle is taken; in other tellings, Theseus carries off her sister, drawing the Amazons in war upon Athens.
