Aegeus is the king of Athens and father of Theseus, who sends his son to slay the Minotaur of Crete. He bids Theseus hoist a white sail on his return if he lives, a black one if he is dead. When the forgetful hero sails home under black canvas, the grieving king flings himself into the sea that ever after bears his name, the Aegean.
