Polynices is a son of Oedipus, who agrees to share Thebes year by year with his brother Eteocles. When Eteocles refuses to yield the throne, Polynices raises the army of the Seven against Thebes. The brothers meet in single combat and kill each other; left unburied by Creon's decree, his corpse becomes the cause of Antigone's defiance and death.
