Ismene is a daughter of Oedipus and sister to Antigone, gentler and more fearful than her defiant sibling. When Antigone resolves to bury their brother Polynices against Creon's edict, Ismene shrinks from the deed, then tries to share the blame and die beside her. Antigone refuses her, and Ismene is left alone, the last surviving child of the cursed house.
