Jocasta is the queen of Thebes, wife of Laius, who exposes her infant son to escape a prophecy that he will kill his father. Years later she weds the stranger Oedipus, the very child she abandoned, and bears him four children. When the truth of their kinship is finally laid bare, she hangs herself in the palace.
