Laius is the king of Thebes warned by an oracle that his own son will kill him and wed his queen. He pins the infant Oedipus' ankles and casts him out to die, but the child survives. Years later, at a crossroads, Laius quarrels with an unknown traveler over the right of way and is struck dead, fulfilling the prophecy by his own son's hand.
