Oedipus is the doomed king of Thebes, abandoned at birth to escape a prophecy that he will kill his father and marry his mother. Raised in ignorance, he fulfills it without knowing, slaying a stranger at a crossroads and winning the throne, and the widowed queen, by answering the Sphinx's riddle. When his relentless search for the truth lays the horror bare, he blinds himself and goes into exile, the great emblem of fate's inescapable cruelty.
