Eteocles is a son of Oedipus who agrees to share Thebes' crown with his brother Polynices, ruling in alternate years, then refuses to yield his turn. Polynices marches against the city with seven champions, and Eteocles defends its seven gates. At the last gate the brothers meet and run each other through, each fulfilling their father's curse that they divide his kingdom by the sword.
