Creon is the brother of Jocasta who seizes Thebes' throne after the sons of Oedipus kill each other at its gates. He forbids burial of the traitor Polynices on pain of death, and when Antigone defies him to bury her brother, he walls her up alive. His rigid pride costs him his son Haemon and his wife Eurydice, both suicides, leaving him a broken man.
