The Lernaean Hydra is a venomous water-serpent born of Typhon and Echidna, dwelling in the swamps of Lerna, and for every head struck off, two grow back in its place. For his second Labor, Heracles battles it with his nephew Iolaus, who sears each severed stump with fire so it cannot regrow. He buries the one immortal head beneath a great rock and dips his arrows in the monster's deadly blood.
