Lerna
Ancient swamp where the nine-headed Lernaean Hydra made its lair.
The marshes of Lerna, near Argos, were the dwelling of the Lernaean Hydra, a monstrous serpent with nine heads that regrew two for every one cut off. It was here that Heracles came for his second labor, burning each stump after Iolaus severed the heads to prevent their regrowth. The swamp was also said to be an entrance to the Underworld, making it one of the most feared places in Greece.
