The Sphinx is a winged beast with a woman's face, a lion's body, and a serpent's tail, sent to plague Thebes. She poses her riddle to every traveler and devours all who answer wrong: what walks on four legs, then two, then three? Oedipus alone replies 'man,' and in defeat she hurls herself from her rock to her death.
