Midgard, the middle enclosure, is the world of humans. The Prose Edda tells that Odin and his brothers Vili and Vé built it from the body of the giant Ymir, raising a wall from his eyebrows to keep the giants out, and gave it to the first humans, Ask and Embla. Around it lies the ocean where the Midgard Serpent, Jormungandr, coils with its tail in its mouth, and Yggdrasil joins it to every other world. Midgard is the stage of the heroic legends of Sigmund, Sigurd and the Volsungs. At Ragnarok Thor kills the serpent and falls dead after nine steps.
