Atli

Atli is a Hunnish king, the legendary reflection of Attila the Hun, who marries Gudrun after the death of Sigurd. Coveting the cursed Nibelung gold held by her brothers, the Gjukungs, he invites Gunnar and Hogni to his hall and betrays them. He has Hogni's heart cut out and throws Gunnar, hands bound, into a snake pit, where Gunnar plays a harp with his toes until the serpents kill him. Gunnar dies without revealing where the gold is sunk. Gudrun takes terrible revenge: she kills the two sons she bore Atli, serves him their flesh and blood, then stabs him and burns his hall around him.
