Gunnar

Gunnar is a king of the Niflungs, son of Gjuki and brother of Gudrun. Disguised as Sigurd by shape-shifting magic, he rides through Brynhildr's wall of flame to win her, a deception that festers until Brynhildr demands Sigurd's death and Gunnar consents to the murder. After Sigurd dies, Gunnar guards the secret of the Rhine gold's hiding place. Captured by Atli and cast bound into a snake pit, he plays a harp with his toes to charm the serpents and refuses to reveal where the treasure lies, choosing death over surrender until an adder strikes his heart.
