Helgi Hundingsbane is a warrior prince of the Volsung line, son of Sigmund, who wins his byname by slaying King Hunding and avenging his kin. The valkyrie Sigrun loves him and rides to shield him in battle, defying her father Hogni, who has betrothed her to another. Helgi kills Sigrun's father and brothers to keep her, then falls himself to her surviving brother Dag, struck by a spear Odin lends. After death he rides from his grave-mound back to Sigrun, who lies one last night in his arms inside the barrow before he must return to Valhalla.
