Sigmund is the Volsung warrior who alone can wrench the sword Gram from the tree Barnstokkr after Odin, disguised as a one-eyed stranger, drives it deep into the trunk. When his sister Signy's husband slaughters their kin, Sigmund survives in the forest, endures a spell as a wolf, and finally avenges the Volsungs. Fathering Sinfjotli with Signy in disguise, he later dies when Odin shatters Gram with his spear in battle. With his last breath he gives the broken shards to his pregnant wife Hjordis, saving them for the unborn Sigurd.
