Volsung is the patriarch of the Volsung line, the greatest dynasty of Norse heroic legend, descended from Odin himself through his son Sigi. In Volsunga saga he raises his hall around the living trunk of the great oak Barnstokk, into which the disguised Odin thrusts a sword for the worthiest man to draw; his son Sigmund alone pulls it free. When his daughter Signy's husband Siggeir treacherously summons him, Volsung refuses to flee, declaring he never fled in battle and will not flee now. He falls fighting, and from his blood the saga's long tragedy of Sigmund and Sigurd unfolds.
