Gram

Norse mythology

Gram

The legendary sword of Sigurd the dragon-slayer, sharp enough to split an anvil and destined to slay the great wyrm Fafnir.

Characters
Odin · Regin · Sigmund · Sigurd

Gram is the sword of the Völsunga saga. Odin, disguised as a one-eyed stranger, thrust it into the tree trunk at the heart of King Volsung's hall, and only Sigmund could pull it out. Years later Odin himself shattered it in Sigmund's last battle. The smith Regin reforged the pieces for Sigurd, Sigmund's son, and the new blade split Regin's anvil to its base and cut through a tuft of wool drifting down a river. With Gram, Sigurd killed the dragon Fafnir from a pit dug in his path, and later he laid it between himself and Brynhildr when he wooed her in Gunnar's shape.
