Otr is a son of the magician Hreidmar and brother to Regin and Fafnir, a shapeshifter who spends his days as an otter, eating fish with eyes shut beside a waterfall. Loki, traveling with Odin and Hoenir, kills him with a single stone, mistaking him for a beast. Hreidmar demands the otter's skin be filled and covered with gold as weregild. To pay it the gods seize Andvari's hoard and his cursed ring; the curse then drives Fafnir to murder Hreidmar and become a dragon, setting the doom of the Volsungs in motion.
