Medusa is the only mortal of the three Gorgon sisters, her hair a nest of snakes and her stare enough to petrify any who meet it. Once a beautiful maiden, she is transformed into a monster after Poseidon takes her in Athena's temple. The hero Perseus beheads her by watching her reflection in his polished shield, and from her severed neck springs the winged horse Pegasus.
