Pegasus is the white winged horse born from the severed neck of Medusa when Perseus beheads her. Where his hoof strikes Mount Helicon, the spring Hippocrene bursts forth to inspire poets. He carries the hero Bellerophon against the Chimera, but throws him when he dares fly to Olympus, and at last takes his place among the gods, bearing Zeus' thunderbolts.
