Dvalin is one of the oldest and most renowned dwarves, a master smith of the deep places. With his kin he forges treasures of legend, among them Freyja's necklace Brisingamen in some tellings, and he is named in the Poetic Edda as a giver of runes to the dwarves, set beside Odin who gave them to the Aesir. His name means the slumbering one. He counts among the dwarves who carved the sword Tyrfing under threat of doom, and the deer that gnaw Yggdrasil's branches and the very sun are called by his name in old verses.
