Skuld is the youngest of the three Norns who sit at the Well of Urd beneath Yggdrasil, carving the fates of gods and men into the world tree. Where Urd holds what has been and Verdandi what is becoming, Skuld governs what shall be; her name means debt or that which is owed. In some sources she also rides among the valkyries who choose the slain on the battlefield, so she both decrees a death and comes to claim it. Always the last named, she stands for the future no one can outrun, the obligation the world owes to its own ending.
