Hildr is a valkyrie and the daughter of King Hogni, carried off by the prince Hedin. Her name means 'battle.' When her father pursues the pair to an island, Hildr stands between the two armies and offers terms, but the feud cannot be quenched and the hosts clash. Each night Hildr walks the field and wakes the slain with her sorcery, raising every fallen warrior, weapons and all, to fight again at dawn. This is the Hjadningavig, the endless battle of the Hjadnings, fated to rage until Ragnarok. She is named in Snorri's Skaldskaparmal and woven through skaldic kennings for war.
