Gondul is a valkyrie, one of Odin's shield-maidens who ride over battlefields and choose which warriors will fall and feast in Valhalla. Her name surfaces again and again in the oldest sources, among the riders listed in the Voluspa and Grimnismal and in skaldic verse, marking her as one of the most ancient of her kind. In the Hakonarmal she is sent by Odin to gather the dying King Hakon the Good and bring him to the Allfather's hall. She pours mead for the slain and serves the will of fate rather than any tenderness of her own.
