Urd is the eldest of the three Norns who sit at the Well of Urd beneath Yggdrasil, weaving the fates of gods and men. Her name means what has become, the fixed and finished past, and from it comes the English word weird and Old Norse orlog, primal law. Each day she and her sisters Verdandi and Skuld draw water and white clay from the well and pour it over the World Tree's roots to keep it from rotting. The fates she shapes are absolute; even the gods bow to what Urd has already laid down.
