Urd's Well
The sacred well beneath Yggdrasil where the three Norns weave the fate of gods and men at the foot of the world tree.
Urd's Well lies beneath the root of Yggdrasil that reaches into the heavens, and the Prose Edda calls it a very holy well. Beside it live the three Norns, Urd, Verdandi and Skuld, who weave the fate of gods and men: Völuspá says they set down laws and chose the lives of humankind. Each day they draw its water, mix it with white clay and pour it over the world tree so that its branches do not rot. Two swans feed in the well, and every day the gods ride over Bifrost to hold their court there; only Thor goes on foot, wading the rivers.
