Orestes is the son of Agamemnon, smuggled to safety after his mother Clytemnestra and her lover murder his father. Grown and commanded by Apollo, he returns to slay them both, avenging his father with his mother's blood. For matricide the Furies hound him to madness, until Athena's court at Athens acquits him and ends the curse on his house.
