Iphigenia is the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, lured to Aulis with the promise of marriage to Achilles. There her father offers her up to appease the wrath of Artemis, so the becalmed Greek fleet may sail for Troy. In some tellings the goddess pities her, snatching her from the altar in a swirl of mist and making her a priestess among the Taurians, leaving a deer in her place.
