Thyestes is the brother and bitter rival of Atreus, with whom he wars over the throne of Mycenae after seducing his wife. In revenge Atreus murders Thyestes' sons and serves them to him at a banquet, revealing their hands and heads only when the meal is done. Thyestes curses the house of Atreus, and his surviving son Aegisthus later avenges him by helping kill Agamemnon.
