Aerope is a granddaughter of King Minos who marries Atreus and becomes queen of Mycenae. She betrays him by taking his brother Thyestes as her lover and helping him steal the golden lamb that signals the right to rule. Her treachery sets in motion the savage feud between the brothers that curses their descendants.
