Pandora is the first mortal woman, shaped by Hephaestus and gifted by every god as Zeus's punishment to humankind for Prometheus' theft of fire. She is given a sealed jar and the curiosity to open it, releasing toil, sickness, and every sorrow upon the world. Only Hope remains caught beneath the lid when she seals it again too late.
