Pithos of Pandora
The great jar given to Pandora by the gods, containing all the evils of the world, and Hope.
Often mistranslated as a box, Pandora's pithos was a large storage jar given to her by the gods when Hephaestus created her as punishment for Prometheus's theft of fire. Warned not to open it, she could not resist curiosity. When she lifted the lid, every evil, disease, death, sorrow, envy, flew out into the world. Only Hope remained, trapped at the bottom, the last gift left for humanity.
