Icarus is the son of Daedalus, given wings of feathers and wax to escape imprisonment on Crete. Warned by his father to fly neither too low nor too high, he is seized by the joy of flight and soars toward the sun. The wax melts, the feathers scatter, and he plunges into the sea that now bears his name.
