Daedalus is the unrivaled Athenian inventor who designs the Labyrinth at Knossos to cage the Minotaur, then helps Ariadne and Theseus escape it. Imprisoned by King Minos, he fashions wings of feathers and wax for himself and his son Icarus to flee Crete by air. He survives the flight to Sicily, but his envy once drove him to hurl his gifted nephew from the Acropolis.
